I agree with the people who said 14 megapixels is not a necessity. My best camera was only 4 megapixels. Whenever I got my subject in good focus, it still did nice 10x13 inch prints. Also, smaller pictures mean smaller file size. Smaller file size means you can take more pictures before you have to unload them onto your computer :) ... If you see a 14 megapixel camera that you like, go for it. But don't let smaller numbers like 6 turn you away.

To answer "how good are Kodak cameras" - Honestly, I have heard better reviews about the other brands. But Kodak seems good for the price :)

I totally agree with Jens about the pixels and about Kodak's poor reputation. Spend a bit of time reading old questions/answers on here, and you'll never touch another Kodak again.

However I believe you know very little about photography and that could become your biggest spring break problem.

You can put a fantastic professional camera in the wrong hands, and it will take lousy photos. Yet a good photographer can coax great photos out of even the simplest cameras.

If you borrow a few books on photography and watch a bunch of tutorials, you will learn a lot.
With some knowledge, you WILL take much better photos and you will learn to overcome (or at least realize) whatever limitations your camera has.

Ignore megapixels, they are NOT a measure of image quality, just of image size. Too many of them can even be deleterious to image quality, especially in low light situations.
6 MP is enough (it's thrice the resolution of a full HD TV screen!), anything more than that is just a marketing tool of the camera makers. Get a 10 MP one, as 6 MP ones aren't even made anymore, unfortunately.

Anyway, for P&S cameras i'd always stick to Canon, even though i'm a Nikon guy myself for DSLRs.

You are not the one missing anything. I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. There has always been a major misconception regarding Kodak. People see the name everywhere associated with photography and by association, its determined that they make great cameras. I'm pretty sure, that in my lifetime, they've never had much more than a decent camera. To me, they're much more of an innovator in photographic paper and film. I'm sure they make other stuff for the darkroom or whatever, stuff that us average laymen don't understand. But since they're such a big name in photography, they must make great cameras. Obviously, looking at anything they've made in terms of cameras since the advent of digital, besides the 14N, they have just made average cameras for average people. If they think they can go into business with it, more power to them. It just lowers the bar for the rest of us.

Actually, your question ought to be about high-end DSLRs. People tend to forget the MOST important tool a photographer could have, can be found between his ears.

Go here and at the bottom of the list, click on the little dot beside Show all cameras. That will give you the complete list of cameras, even ones that are discontinued. Scroll down till you find the Kodaks. I hope you can recognize the model number.
