Thanks for the video. Any chance you know if when powered with DC, if the video/audio signal can be read realtime by a laptop (iMovie)? I used to be able to get a realtime signal from my MiniDV cam over FireWire.

@LordoftheReef Thx, can you set it to record continuously for like half an hour or more or does it automatically shut itself off if you don’t manually interact with it for a length of time. I heard that it will shut itself off automatically if you don’t touch the menu buttons at least once every 15 minutes or so (to preserve the battery – but i want to hook it up to a tripod and a/c). Thx.

@scotthemedic this is true, but there are definitely cameras with smoother digital zoom than the zi8. Zooming on the zi8 is simply unbearable.

The reason for the zoom on the Zi8 is that it doesn’t actually have optical zoom. It’s digital zoom, which can’t really be done smoothly. It’s cropping pixels and enlarging, however you swing it. It’s got a lot of pixels to play with, but the way it works, it has to jump at each step. Great overview though.

Thanks for putting up. 1) Can you use the Zi8 camera as a webcam? 2) Can you film with it connected to a laptop and record on the laptop’s hard drive directly? 3) Does it only work off battery, or can you use an a/c power (i.e. if I do a tripod setup and want to record for six hours?
